Evernote is a free, web-based program that allows you to compile and store a variety of documents and files for easy access. Evernote allows you to create your own notes, save photos and web pages, and collaborate with peers via a sharing feature. There are a variety of computer and mobile apps for Evernote in addition to the web-based service, which makes it easy to store and access your information.
After watching the introduction video, go to the Evernote homepage. On the homepage, click “Create an Account” in the top left corner and follow the instructions.
Once you have an account and are logged in, what do you see? Are there any aspects of the page that you are immediately drawn to?
After you are done exploring, create a new note by clicking the “New Note” button.
Title the note with your online textbook topic.
Make the contents of this note the “Emerging Trends and Open Issues” section of your online textbook topic.
Also, set the URL to your page of the online textbook.
Tag the post “online textbook entry”
When you are finished, save the note. You should see the note appear in the center column of your homepage.
Now that you’ve created a new note, create a new notebook. Explore for a few minutes and see if you can figure it out on your own! Name your new notebook “Online Textbook.”
How intuitive did you find this process to be?
When your new notebook is created, can add the note you created to it by “dragging and dropping” the note over the notebook. Another way to add notes to your notebook is to open the note and select the desired notebook from the dropdown menu. Choose whichever of these methods you would prefer and add your online textbook note to the “Online Textbook” notebook.
Earlier, you tagged your note. Evernote lets you search by tags and note content. Go ahead and conduct two searches:
Search by the tag you assigned to your note (“online textbook entry”)
Search by a word in your note.
Do you think this is a feature that would be beneficial to you, particularly if you had many notes? Why or why not?
Go ahead and clear your search.
Another neat feature of Evernote is that it lets you share your notebooks. You can share them via email, social media, or with other Evernote users.
Share your notebook with another Evernote user from your group. You can do this by sending an email invitation and requiring an Evernote login.
How else could you share your notebook with the members of your group?
What are the benefits of notebook sharing?
Lastly, go back to your note and open it for editing. Attach a fair use photo to your note that reflects your online textbook topic.
What do you notice about the attachment once it is uploaded?
Do you prefer the attachment showing inside the note or as something to be opened in addition to the note? Why?
Some questions to consider:
Do you see yourself using Evernote?
If so, in what capacity?
If not, why not?
Is Evernote something you would promote to the teachers in your school as a way to share ideas, lesson plans, or other information? Why or why not?
